How to Make the Best First Impression in Interviews (Phone & Face-to-Face)

Interviews can be daunting, but the right preparation makes a big difference. Whether it’s a phone or in-person interview, knowing what to expect and how to present yourself can boost your confidence and help you stand out. Here are some practical tips to get you ready.

How to Make the Best First Impression in Interviews (Phone & Face-to-Face)

An interview whether it be over the phone or face-to-face is nerve-wracking, here are a few tips to help you prepare, feel confident, and make a great impression.

Phone Interviews:

The phone interview is a crucial step – it can either make or break your chances. It is crucial to come prepared, so start by researching the company beforehand. You never know when that call might come, and you want to sound like you are ready for it! Once the call starts, find a quiet, distraction-free spot to chat. This isn’t the time for noisy background sounds, like the TV blaring or the dog barking. You want to be focused and professional.

Speak clearly, with confidence and take your time. Remember, listening is just as important as talking. Wait for the interviewer to finish speaking before responding, no interruptions, even if you’re excited to share your thoughts! Most importantly, bring the energy! You don’t want to sound like you just rolled out of bed (even if you did). Show enthusiasm and positivity in your voice, it’ll help you stand out as the type of person they want to invite for that second interview.

Face-to-Face Interviews

Now, onto the face-to-face interview! The first thing your interviewer will notice is your appearance, so make sure to dress the part. Ditch the sweats and hoodie in favour of professional attire. Think sharp suits, button-up shirts, or a sleek dress, anything that shows you take the opportunity seriously. However, depending on the role you’re applying for, not every job requires a suit. An office based role might lean more towards business attire while more creative or tech-focused roles may have a relaxed dress code.

But it’s not just about looking good, you need to show that you’ve done your homework. Research the role you’re applying for and get familiar with the company by checking out their website. Trust me, walking into an interview without knowing the basics of what the job entails or what the company does is a red flag. Have your common interview questions prepared, but don’t memorise them word-for-word. You want to sound natural, not robotic. Practising beforehand will make you feel comfortable and ensure that you have a polished response ready, it beats the awkward silence any day. Have a few questions of your own ready too, asking questions about the role and company shows that you’re engaged and have thought critically about the role. It will also help you learn more about the company and whether it is the right fit for you.

Arrive a little early, about 15 minutes before your scheduled time. It’s always better to be early than rushing in at the last minute. However, do not show up too early, aim to walk inside about 10 minutes before your interview. Showing up too early can be just as awkward as being late.

Your body language will speak volumes. Sit up straight and avoid the ‘slouch of doom’. Smile and show that you’re confident and excited to be there. It’s an easy way to make a great first impression! Yes, the handshake still matters! A firm handshake not only shows confidence but also leaves a lasting impression.

Final Thoughts

Interviews can be intimidating, but with the right preparation, you can walk in (or pick up the phone) with confidence. By researching the company, practicing your responses, and presenting yourself professionally, you’ll make a great first impression and increase your chances of success. Remember, interviews are a two-way street – while they’re assessing you, it’s also your chance to see if the role and company are the right fit for you.
